A dream is born...
Alright fine, too heavy handed?
In all honesty, I don't know if this is going to work, but I sincerely hope it does.
A confluence of events led to the launch of this effort. I was sitting in the drive-thru of a well-known coffee shop, marveling at myself for paying more than $5 for a cold brew and listening to the latest debate about Student Loan Forgiveness on the radio when I casually thought, "Man, I'd definitely skip one cup of coffee a month to help pay off someone's student loan debt."
From that moment, an idea started to form. At first, I wanted to start a subscriber-based email list that costs $5 a month and minimize the number of emails sent to just one per month. That email would like the current "winner" of the drawing and state how many subscribers there were, so all members could see wher the money goes and how we could actually change lives.
My lawyer friends were quick to point out that it wouldn't work. Using phrases like "that's just a lottery" and "raffles are tightly regulated." Deterred, but not defeated, I tried to figure a way to work around the system, when I was sent a link to a friend's funding drive that was trying to raise money after a bout with cancer (my friend won!).
In the spirit of the Aha! moment, I set work on this version of the website. By making the funding part of the business an afterthought that is completely voluntary, rather than compulsory, I think I've found the workaround necessary to keep this idea alive.
Will it work? Well...that's up to you, dear friends. I know what I think I would do if offered a chance to cancel someone's debt; but I'm not sure how others will respond. Still, if even a small percentage of folks respond to this movement, I think we have a real shot at doing some good.
If you still have questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me directly. I'll do my best to answer all inquiries with speed and clarity. If I have time, I'll even offer to jump on a video chat or something. I love feedback and I'd love to hear what you think we can do to make this a better experience for everyone.
